Chemical softeners work through the ionization of the minerals present in the water in order to get rid of them. Unfortunately, the use of chemical softeners often makes the water undrinkable and useless for cooking and the like.

Filtration softeners

Running hard water through a filtration process removes sediments of minerals making the water hard and thereby make it softer and more useable. Such filters can be found in sink taps and refrigeration water dispensers and they have an added advantage in that they improve the taste of the water. However, they do not come cheap and their steep price tag often chases off prospective buyers.

Descalers

Although not exactly water softeners in the strictest definition, descalers are effective in dealing with hard water since they address and solve the problems that result directly from the presence or use of hard water.
